— Holland Cotter 2001. 11. 30

ART IN REVIEW; ‘Ten’

This attractive show, organized by the painter Arnold Chang, represents a traditionalist flank of contemporary Chinese art. The 10 artists, age 46 to 94, work in the brush-and-ink landscape genre. They reveal it to be as stylistically varied and, in its subtle way, as conceptually audacious as it has aways been.
……
Of all the artists, only one, the prodigious Yu Peng, introduces figures and narrative; his two long scrolls, one vertical, the other horizontal, are extraordinary.
……
Many of these painters draw on specific historical models, customizing and stretching them. In the process they reassert the dual nature of the Chinese brush-and-ink landscape as both ideal and personal. Whatever the nostalgia quotient of the genre — and this as much as anything separates them from a lot of new, international-looking art coming out of China these days — it demonstrates, in the right, imaginative hands, how adventurous the pursuit of tradition can be.
